The health risk of plastic
Plastic is a prevalent material in the United States & in the whole world too, yet it's safety has been questioned by many scientific studies. Plastic has become a part of life as much as drinking water. In fact, much of the water that is purchased in the United States is packaged in plastic. Plastic has been a part of daily existence in the United States since the 1950s. It was first invented in 1862, when Alexander Parkes introduced an organic compound made from cellulose. This compound could be molded while hot, but held its shape while cool. If this, along with the organic cellulose compounds that followed, were the type of plastics that ultimately became a part of everyday life, the health risks from plastic wouldn’t be a current concern. Unfortunately, the more natural cellulose product was not chosen for popular use. The Caustic Compounds of Plastic The plastic materials that became common were polyethylene compounds—a compound that is the result of a reaction between ethylene and benzaldyhde. Polyethylene was the first plastic in the United States to sell more than a billion pounds a year. It is found everywhere—in soda bottles, milk jugs, grocery bags, dry cleaning bags, canned food linings, and in packaging for many other types of foods and storage containers. There are also PVC plastics, found in our pipes, baby bottles, and baby toys. Plastic has become as American as apple pie. Yet modern plastics pose significant, possibly deadly, health risks. Two Plastic Compounds to Avoid Two compounds in plastic, BPA and phthalates, have been linked to serious health conditions in numerous studies. The EPA and FDA have refused to accept these studies, but the labs carrying out the studies are all well respected and the studies have held up to significant peer review. BPAs and phthalates have been implicated in: There are also problematic compounds which can contaminate plastics as they are made. Some plastics, for example, are contaminated with lead, cadmium, or mercury, the health risks of which have already been well documented and fully explored. Warnings for BPA Dr. Joseph Mercola of the popular health website Mercola.com has gone on record speaking out about BPA dangers. He says, “BPA mimics the sex hormone estradiol, which can trigger major changes in your body. The problems associated with even smaller amounts of BPA include structural damage to your brain, hyperactivity, , increased fat formation and risk of obesity, early puberty and disrupted reproductive cycles. The potential health risks of BPA have been debated for years. Meanwhile people just keep right on ingesting the toxin—at levels that are anyone’s guess.” There is a possible risk of food and drink contamination simply from being packaged in plastic containers. Heating plastics in the microwave can increase this risk. Heated plastic releases harmful chemicals into the food it holds, which can dramatically increase exposure. Freezing plastic also results in the same danger. Avoid letting bottles of water become overheated in the car during summer months, as well as becoming frozen in the winter. Absence of Safety Standards for Plastic Unfortunately, a product’s placement on the open market is not a guarantee of that product’s safety. Environmental health professor Joel Tickner of the University of Massachusetts has stated, “There’s a misunderstanding the public has that when they go to the store and buy a product, someone has tested it and deemed it safe. The sad reality of our current system is that there’s no current requirement to demonstrate safety before chemicals are used in products.” Protection by Avoiding High Risk Plastic Products Educated consumers can protect their health from the risk of plastics by being aware of ways to minimize harmful plastic compounds. Here are a few easy ways to do that:
Baby bottles, baby toys, household pipes and other common plastic items also should be minimized if possible. Pregnant or nursing mothers should be especially vigilant as many of the most harmful plastic effects target developing fetuses. Parents of young children should also be cautious as children under six have been found to have many more times the amount of BPAs in their body than the amount that leads to sterilization in laboratory rats. |
